East End House

East End House has served under-resourced members of the East Cambridge community for over 140 years. We use a holistic approach to provide a variety of resources to support local families such as childcare, senior citizen programming, an emergency food pantry, and parenting education. The East End House Emergency Food Program provides low-income families, seniors and individuals with nutritious food and empowers them to make healthy food choices. The Pantry distributes food to over 500 families each month with an emphasis on fresh, wholesome and culturally-appropriate foods.

Volunteer Role

Emergency Food Pantry volunteers are caring individuals who want to lend their time and effort to ensuring all members of the community have access to healthy food. Individuals work in a close team of regular volunteers every week led by the Community Programs Associate.

Duties include:

  • Setting-up pantry and food donations to prepare them for clients
  • Assisting in unloading the food deliveries from Food for Free and the Greater Boston Food Bank
  • Bagging groceries for individuals and families who come to the food pantry
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the Food Pantry
  • Greeting consumers and help them with the check-in and sign-up processes
  • Understanding and upholding pantry rules and regulations
  • Keeping the pantry stocked and clean, breaking down, tying up, and disposing of all boxes and other waste

We are looking forĀ  volunteers interested in making a weekly commitment to being a part of our Food Pantry team every Friday from 9am-11:30pm. If you would like to apply, please contact Giovanna Castro Matos, our Volunteer Coordinator, at or 617-876-4444.
